Vandals destroy Shisa outside Nago Museum

Date Posted: 2011-02-04

Two large plaster Shisa statues at the Nago Museum in Agarie district of Nago City have been destroyed by unknown vandals.

"We don't know who did it," said a member of the museum staff, "but this is sad that this vandalism happened on the opening day of Nago Sakura Festival." The gallery has filed its damage report with Nago City Police. One shisa was near the entrance of Gallery ‘Min-Tama', near the museum, while the other was at the museum itself.

The Shisa at the Nago Museum was erected last summer, while the gallery guardian Shisa was put into place in February 2009 to inspire activity and safety in Nago. The 50cm tall museum Shisa was totally destroyed, while the gallery side Shisa, which was about one meter tall, had its head knocked off.

The vandalism was discovered between midnight January 28th and before dawn January 29th.
