Defense Ministry setting up office in Nago City

Date Posted: 2011-01-14

As the Futenma Marine Corps Air Station relocation project mires in opposition from Okinawa residents, the Japan Defense Ministry says it is going to establish an office in Nago City as part of its efforts to seek cooperation from local communities on U.S. base issues.

The ministry says it plans to have the office operational before the end of March. It had set up a preparatory office in the Henoko area in late December, with six staff members assigned. The new office comes as local residents are voicing strong opposition to the U.S.-Japan Agreement to move Futenma from Ginowan City to the Henoko district of Nago City.

The new office will eventually have 44 staff members who will interface with local community leaders and groups. Through the new office, the Okinawa Defense Bureau8 based in Kadena Town hopes to maintain close contact with both Nago City and neighboring communities in northern Okinawa, discussing both base relocation issues and economic revitalization projects, as well.
