Convenience store manager admits embezzling funds

Date Posted: 2011-01-14

The 33-year-old manager of a convenience store is now on trial in Naha District Court on charges he embezzled money from the business.

Takeyuki Taira has admitted to the charges he took エ4,477,000 in company funds. "I wanted to get away from work," was Taira's explanation to the court when asked why he did it. Prosecutors are seeking a three-year prison term, while defense lawyers are asking for a suspended sentence.

Taira said he had become increasingly dissatisfied with his job because he couldn't take a holiday. He also berated the store owner's speech and behavior, and said that's when he decided to commit the crime.
