Dutch, Swedish musicians headline Cotonoha Jazz eventDate Posted: 2011-01-14 The Sebastiaan Kaptein Project led by the Dutch musician headlines Cotonoha’s ‘Standard Time Vol. 1’ event, performing original and edgy interpretations of classic jazz standards covering everything from melodic ballads to jazz-funk. Joining Sebastiaan is Swedish artist and “Jazz in Sweden Artist” Johan Borgstrom to share the stage. Borgstrom’s toured Japan in the past, but this will be his first performance in Okinawa. The talented musician plays saxophone, clarinet and flute while composing and arranging music and then performing vocals. He comes from a musical family—he’s the youngest of six, with father a guitarist and singer, while his mother’s a pianist—and got his start at age 14 with the saxophone. He’s also skilled with the mandolin, violin and piano, and built his musical foundation on not only family, but music classes and cathedral choirs. Borgstrom, who graduated cum laude at the Conservatory of Groningen in 1996, has performed in 41 countries, from Afghanistan to Zanzibar. Kaptein, who comes from Oegstgeest in The Netherlands, has toured, played or recorded with Toots Thielemans, Mike del Ferro, Michiel Borstiap with the Opera in Qatar 2003, and with Toon Roos. He’s found his niche, and now lives here in Okinawa. The Sebastiaan Kaptein Project includes Chiba Toshiyuki on alto sax and flute, Kamanta on Piano, and Isao Nishikawa on bass. Doors to the event open at 7:30 p.m., with the show starting at 8 p.m.Tickets for the January 23rd performance are ¥1,500 in advance, or ¥2,000 at the door. Drinks and food are not included in the ticket price.
