Tourist landmark presses to attract more visitors

Date Posted: 2011-01-14

The Nago Pineapple Park president wants to increase the tourism focus on northwest Okinawa, and is ready to build an observatory on Kouri Island to get attention.

Kiyoshi Asato, who leads the tourism industry development company, says his Nago Pineapple Park is already planning for additional tourists as it builds an observatory on Kouri Island, a part of Nakijin Village. He says the main observatory building will reach 36 meters skyward, the center of a multiplex tourism facility. Nakijin Village and Pineapple Park Company have already inked a development contract.

We would like to promote Kouri Island and the surrounding area, and activate life in the area," says Asato. Kouri Island has a large bridge linking the island and Yagaji Island, and another bridge connect Yagaji Island and Nakijin Village. With proper promotion, Asato believes many tourists will visit Kouri Island after traveling to Motobu to Expo Park and the Churaumi Aquarium.

The planned facilities will include an exhibition hall for shells, a restaurant, and souvenir shops. The project is expected to lead to about 50 new jobs for the area.
