Airborne soldier lands on farmer's field by mistake

Date Posted: 2011-01-14

It was an accident, nobody was injured and no damage was done, and the Okinawa Defense Bureau has apologized.

It was all a mistaken landing on Ie Island last week as a parachutist training with the U.S. military accidentally landed on a tobacco field at Nishimae in Ie Village, some 30 meters away from the military base fence line. The soldier was one of nine conducting airborne training, and the only one who didn't land on base property. The U.S. military immediately notified the Okinawa Defense Bureau, which dispatched an inspector to check.

The planting season hadn't begun, and there was no crop damage, and there were no injuries, so Ie Village Mayor Masatoshi Oshiro and the staff of the village Planning and General Affairs section did not file a written protest. Okinawa Prefecture, however, has demanded complete safety control of U.S. Armed Forces training in a petition to the Okinawa Defense Bureau.

The Okinawa Defense Bureau has assured both Ie Village and Okinawa Prefecture they've demanded complete safety controls to prevent a reoccurrence. The U.S. Marine Corps controls Ie Island auxiliary airport.
