Two elderly people die in unrelated house fires

Date Posted: 2011-01-07

Fires swept through two northern Okinawa residences over the holiday weekend, killing two persons whose bodies were found in separate locations.

A fire that broke out shortly after midnight on New Year's Day totally destroyed a wooden one-story house in Nakasone in Nakajin Village.

Responding firefighters and police found the body of 88-year-old Yaeko Tamaki in a bedroom. Motobu Police confirmed the identity, and the fact Tamaki lived in the house.

Tamaki's son and his 63-year-old wife were living in the house together; the wife suffered burns on her arm.

Less than 24 hours later, fire swept through a two-story ferroconcrete house in Miyazato district of Nago. Nago City firefighters responding to the blaze found the body of 84-year-old Yoshiko Oshiro, a resident of the home. One of Oshiro's sons and his wife lived in the same home, but they were not injured. A second son who was visiting the family was also not injured.
