Ginowan group demands immediate Futenma closing

Date Posted: 2011-01-07

More than two dozen protesters brandishing flags saying "Remove the Futenma Base" circled Futenma Marine Corps Air Station Monday as part of the 28th New Year Car Demonstration hosted by the Ginowan Civic Conference.

Some 30 vehicles joined the demonstration, which circled the perimeter of Futenma, with protesters loudly voicing their anti-base sentiments. The Ginowan Civic Conference secretary-general, Yoshio Chinen, says his group is "going to make an appeal making the situation of the Futenma base clear for the whole Okinawa Prefecture, the whole Japan, and the whole world, and proving that it is best to unconditionally remove the dangerous Futenma base altogether from Okinawa and Japan." He says "relocation will not take care of the dangers."

Ginowan City's newly elected mayor, Takeshi Asato, briefly joined the protest. Asato, who ran for office and won on an anti-Futenma platform said he resolves to make "Okinawa as peaceful as possible without bases. I do my best for progress of ending base problems together with Okinawan people."
