Drunken woman killed trying to cross Okinawa Expressway

A woman who had been drinking was killed after being struck by a van as she tried crossing the Okinawa Expressway at Shimashi in Ginowan City.

Police investigators say the 18-year-old victim was struck by a van near a bus stop of the University of the Ryukyus. Friends told police the teen had been drinking at an Izakaya near the University of the Ryukyus and had repeatedly tried crossing the expressway. Each time she tried friends tried pulling her back, but she’d break free and finally was hit by a motorist.

The van driver was identified as a 39-year-old nursing care worker from Okinawa City. The accident occurred Saturday about 8 a.m. Two other vehicles rear-ended the van in a pileup, but there were no serious injuries.

Police imposed a temporary speed limit of 50km/h between Naha and Kitanakagusuku exchanges from 6:20 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. because of effect of the accident. According to NEXCO West Japan Okinawa administration office, a traffic jam occurred across a 7.2km stretch of highway shortly after the accident.
