Newborn baby found dead on restaurant parking lot

Date Posted: 2011-03-13

The dead body of an infant was found in a Yomitan Village restaurant parking lot by Kadena Police responding to a citizen call.

Police say they received a call from a local resident asking they “please investigate because something stinks bad here” in a restaurant parking lot in the village’s Iramina district. The ‘stinky’ police found was the body of a newborn infant wrapped in clothing and a plastic bag. Investigators are treating the case as an abandoned corpse for now, while they await an autopsy that will determine the cause of death.

Kadena Police say the infant girl weighed 3,000 grams and was 49cm long. They say the baby’s umbilical cord was still attached. There were no visible injuries, but investigators say decomposition of the body indicated the death occurred a few days earlier.

The body was discovered in an out-of-business restaurant parking lot near Highway 58, on a residential street filled with apartments and private residences. The 36-year-old man who called police said he’d been trimming his garden when he noticed the odor and went looking. He found a small rucksack placed near a wall, with stuff inside in a plastic bag. He said “I feel pain in my heart as the parent who has a child.”

Complicating the matter for police is when and how the body arrived in the parking lot. Another resident who lives in a nearby apartment said he visited the parking lot about 6:30 a.m. the same day, but “I didn’t notice the stink.” He also told police he visits the area “almost every day, and that I didn’t notice any body cast away this morning.”
