Chinese upset over Ishigaki decision on Senkaku IslandsDate Posted: 2010-12-23 The city in far southern Okinawa Prefecture adopted the ordinance marking January 14, 1895, as the day Japan claimed the islands, and Ishigaki City designates January 14th as a Day of Commemoration of the East China Sea islands. The islands are 480 kilometers southwest of Okinawa’s main island. China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu criticized the ordinance, calling it void because there’s no point plotting any violation of China’s sovereignty of the islands. China calls the islands Diaoyu, and claims them as part of Chinese territory. Jiang reaffirmed China’s stance, calling the Senkaku islands “inherent Chinese territories and that the country holds indisputable sovereignty of them.” |
