Kadena runway repairs boost Urasoe noise levels

Date Posted: 2010-12-23

Urasoe City officials are formally complaining about increased noise pollution as a result of Kadena Air Base closing a runway for repairs this fall.

Only six noise complaints were registered with Urasoe City officials in the six-month period April through September, but that number jumped to 10 over a 2˝-month period October through December 15th. The protest was lodged with the Okinawa Defense Bureau as early as November 8th, but flights were not reduced.

When jet fighters were flying, officials say, noise levels were registered at more than 70db a total of 42 times, with a maximum sound level of 94db on November 5th. Urasoe City residents said “children are afraid. It was the first time for such big noise.” Citizens have called for Urasoe leaders to join with Chatan Town and Ginowan City in demanding improvements.
