Miyako taxi driver arrested on drinking, driving chargesDate Posted: 2010-12-09 Miyakojima City Police have charged the taxi driver, Toshio Katsuren, with violating the Road Traffic Act that applies to drinking and driving. “I drank two beers earlier in the day, but plenty of time had passed,” Katsuren protested, “and it’s not drunk driving. Police disagree, saying Katsuren is suspected of driving drunk in Nishzato, Hirara in Miyakojima City about 12:40 a.m. Saturday. When police administered a standard alcometer test, Katsuren reportedly at having three times the legal limit of alcohol on his breath. The arrest was made after a patrolling police officer spotted Katsuren’s taxi, whose tail lamp was not functioning, and pulled him over. When the police officer smelled liquor on Katsuren’s breath, the tests were administered. On top of the drunk driving charge, police have cited the taxi driver with failure to possess a valid driver’s license. |
