Courtney turns up yuletide heat this weekend

Date Posted: 2010-12-09

The snow’s a long way away, in the eastern United States and in Europe, but a merry, merry Okinawa style Christmas celebration is ready to kick off Saturday at Camp Courtney’s Christmas and Holiday Festival.

Camp Courtney officials say the festival, which starts Saturday at noon and runs to 8 p.m. is designed to light a spark into hearts across Okinawa. The festivities continue for a second day Sunday noon to 8 p.m. at the Commissary/PX complex.

Festivals are by design great parties, and you cannot have a good one without good food, good music, and friendly competition. The Camp Courtney Christmas and Holiday Festival has it all, and is primed to delight both SOFA status personnel and locals alike with free top-notch entertainment, game booths, amusement rides, carnival rides for the children, and enough diversity of foods to appease the heartiest appetite. MCCS this year is waiving admission fees for Kiddie Land, and will host bouncers and rides for the youngsters to get rid of the excess energy. In addition to the traditional festival favorites, there’ll be interactive game booths this year, along with seasonal treats including turkey and hot chocolate.

Santa makes his way to festivities via an inflatable Santa House where kids can meet him and have their pictures taken. Families are asked to bring their own cameras for the event, and MCCS event staff will snap the pictures. Every family visiting Santa’s house will have a chance to win a holiday present.

And that’s not all. In the continued spirit of giving, Marine Corps Community Services is offering great giveaways and prizes provided by generous sponsors. So, whether you’ve been naughty or nice (preferably nice), there just might be a present for you. This year, one lucky winner will win round trip tickets to one of five United Air Lines gateway destinations, or a seating class upgrade aboard UAL flights departing from Japan, courtesy of United Airlines and Omega World Travel. Courtney Christmas and Holiday Festival prize drawings take place at 2:15 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

On-stage entertainment kicks off at 1:10 p.m. Saturday with One Call Gospel Choir holiday music, followed by Kids’ Carnival. The Ryujin Mabuya Character Show is at 3:15 p.m., and a meet-and-greet session at 3:45 p.m. What’s Up/ Akemi Dance School Holiday Special starts at 4:45 p.m., followed by Chijinsyu Wakati-da at 5:30 p.m. In Heat Variety Band performs at 6 p.m. and the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders Performance starts at 7 p.m.

The Pacific Okinawa Players (POPs) will sing Christmas carols at 1:10 p.m. Sunday, followed by the Kids’ Carnival at 1:30 p.m. and Heart Catch Purikyua Character Show at 3:15 p.m. T-da Dance Studio Holiday Special – Hip Hop Dance Performance gets going at 4:45 p.m., followed by the III Marine Expeditionary Force Party Band at 5:30 p.m. In Heat Variety Band performs at 6 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders Performance.
