Heavy crane topples; causes damage, takes out power

Date Posted: 2010-12-09

A 25-ton heavy crane mounted on a truck tipped over Tuesday as it worked on an apartment construction project in Naha City, wiping out power to a nearby home when a utility pole was destroyed.

No injuries were reported at the site in Ishimine, Shuri, when the accident occurred about 9:20 a.m. as the crane was lifting building materials to a three-story apartment building under construction. Construction workers say the crane was maneuvering the load when the truck tipped over, sending the crane crashing into a utility pole and a light truck parked at a neighboring house. The crane’s 15-meter maneuvering arm broke the utility pole in half.

Okinawa Electric Power Company says one home in the quiet residential neighborhood that’s also in the school zone for both elementary and junior high schools, was plunged into darkness when the utility pole broke. Area residents said “if the accident had happened at a different time, the results could have been tragic.” A 69-year-old sculptor whose home was damaged, Akio Tomimoto. Said he and his wife Hideko were home when they heard the crashing sound and felt the earth tremble. “I was getting ready to go out in my car when suddenly the house was shaking. I thought it was a big earthquake. I was worried, and when I found out my work which was stored in the car was destroyed, I was unhappy.”

The construction supervisor at the site said it was too early to know what happened. “We don’t understand the cause of the crane truck falling down, and I don’t want to comment until I can do so accurately.” The Okinawa Labor Bureau Security Board of Health was quick to comment, though. “The crane truck accident is a mistake caused by overloading the crane beyond the capability of the machine,” he said, adding “accidents tend to increase at the end of the year, and workers should obey the law.”
