Finding awamori with iPhone easier than ever

Date Posted: 2010-12-02

Modern technology is reaching every corner of the globe, and leaving no industry untouched, as now a local company has come up with an Awamori Large-Scale Dictionary for the smart phone iPhone.

The software application produced by Rakuen-Keikaku, a company that deals with the restaurant and publishing industries, works with the Apple iPhone, listing all 365 brands of awamori from the beverage’s 48 distilleries on Okinawa. The software lets customers sort for different awamori brands, taste, fragrance, percentage of alcohol, by distiller and by awamori name.

The company’s president says “it can make a contribution to expanding awamori into mainland markets, giving me the chance to increase opportunities for youth and women to enjoy awamori.” The new application is set for a mid-December release in time to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. The new application, which also works on the iPod Touch, will sell for ¥600. A company official says it’s examining ways to integrate the new application into many iPad and Google’s Android operating system, setting a goal of 10,000 units sold in the initial marketing effort.

The application introduces the history, manufacturing process and personality of each of the 48 awamori distillers in the Prefecture. It also has columns about awamori, and Okinawa cooking recipes that use awamori.
