House fire claims one victim in Naha

Date Posted: 2010-12-02

A nighttime fire that broke out on the second floor of a residence in Naha City claimed the life of one individual.

Firefighters say they were battling the blaze, which started in the wooden tile roofing of the two-story home, when one body was discovered. An occupant of the house says two people are unaccounted for—89-year-old Sestuko Tamaki and a son, 57-year-old Kazuya—and that the body could be one of them.

The fire in Naha City’s Asato area burned nearly three hours before being extinguished by firefighters. It spread to a neighboring house before being brought under control. Firemen say the wooden structure in the Sakae-machi market area housed an izakaya and a sanshin school on the first floor, while the apartment was on the second.
