Police patrol car collides head-on with taxi

Date Posted: 2003-10-31

A police patrol car chasing a suspected purse-snatcher collided head-on with a taxi at an intersection on Highway 58 in Kumoji, Naha City. According to Naha Police, the patrol car had been chasing two men suspected of purse snatching who were fleeing on a motorcycle. The patrol car had its sirens on and the officers also used the car’s loudspeaker to warn other cars to stop. As it entered the intersection against red light it collided head on with a taxi that had started to move when the traffic light turned green.

The taxi driver suffered injuries that take two weeks to heal. The two police officers in the patrol car were unharmed. Naha Police are conducting an investigation in order to determine whether the police officers exercised proper caution when they entered the intersection against the red light. “We have to determine whether the officers paid sufficient attention to other traffic. Even if a police car can under certain circumstances drive against red light, it does not mean that the officers driving the car do not have to pay proper attention to other traffic,” a Naha Police spokesman said.
