Selection of head of Okinawa Graduate University nears

Date Posted: 2003-01-17

A proposed graduate school to be built in Okinawa took another step toward reality this week, as members of the Preparatory Committee for Establishment of Okinawa Graduate University held their third meeting in San Francisco Sunday. High on the agenda was the selection of the first president of the new school.

The committee was presented with a list of 30 candidates that number was narrowed to only a few, from which the final selection will be made. Although the seven-member committee said after the meeting that they had agreed on the finalists, no names were provided.

According to Hiroyuki Hosoda of the Okinawa Development Agency, the president will be selected within this year. Nobel Laureate, MIT Professor Jerome Friedman was quoted saying that the discussion had been very productive. “We had very constructive discussion and I think we all have a very good idea who the new president will be. I think we will be ready to publish his name soon,” Friedman said after the meeting. Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine also attended the meeting.
