Date Posted: 2010-11-18

A Filipino seaman is in stable condition after a fight aboard his ship turned violent and he was stabbed by another crewman.

The 39-year-old sailor was one of six crewmen aboard the ‘21st Tokuhomaru’, a fishing vessel belonging to the Okinawa Prefecture Cooperative Association of Coastal Tuna Fisheries. The ship’s captain, Seiya Higa, 48, told 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters by radio the injured man and another Filipino crewman began arguing, “there was a fight between the Filipino sailors, and one was stabbed with a knife in his neck and chest.”

The 21st Tokuhomaru was fishing about 590 kilometers southeast of Okinawa’s main island at the time of the Saturday afternoon incident. Coast Guard rescue personnel were unable to respond immediately because of weather and the distance from their vessels. The Tokuhomaru sailed from ‘Wakayama Port enroute to Naha, where it arrived earlier this week.
