Embezzlement charges re-levied on company director

Date Posted: 2010-11-18

An elderly chief director of a Naha City business cooperative is under arrest again, charged the second time with embezzling ¥1.3 million from Minatomachi Ward, Naha, co-op.

The 78-year-old board member, Masanaga Kuramoto, continues to protest his innocence, maintaining he didn’t embezzle money from the co-op Nissen Naha, a group made up of shopkeepers in Okinawa. Instead, he says he “used the money for the future of the partnership.”

Kuramoto is accused of taking \1,300,000 out of a co-op account of Nissen Naha, and Naha Marusen from post offices in Naha City and Tokyo between December 2003 and April 2004. Prosecutors say the man used the money himself. When the woman who was secretary-general of co-op Nissen Naha sought repayment of the debt incurred by Kuramoto’s check cashing in May 2004, and he failed to cough up the money, Kuramoto was arrested and indicted because he had cashed the check and used the money for personal activities.
