Naha City to build public gravesite to Shikina

Date Posted: 2010-11-11

Ancestor worship is at the core of Okinawa historical and cultural customs as well as religion, and most people consider the family grave the heart of tradition.

One problem confronting municipalities has been what to do with bodies of those without family, and Naha City has come up with a solution. It has designed a cooperative grave for the city that can be used not only for strangers, but for others who don’t want eternal rest at the same gravesite as the rest of the family because of feuding or other problems.

Naha City’s cooperative public gravesite has been designed with 2,600 niches and spaces where remains can be stored. Individuals can choose whether to put remains inside the gravesite forever, or for a shorter period. The plan calls for ossuary places in the graveyard in Shikina grave area.
