USMC trailer leaks oil on Highway 58 in Urasoe

Date Posted: 2010-11-11

Urasoe City Police are downplaying the severity of an oil leak from a U.S. Marine Corps trailer that spewed a small amount of oil onto Highway 58 between Camps Kinser and Foster for five minutes in the overnight hours last weekend.

Officials say the tractor-trailer unit had pulled onto the highway about 2 a.m. as part of a three-vehicle convoy. A trailing vehicle spotted the oil leaking from the trailer, and alerted authorities. The oil spill covered two traffic lanes in a six-foot wide pattern at the most severe points near the Gusukuma Intersection.

Military hazardous materials crews and Okinawa Highway Office HazMat crews responded, sprinkling sawdust on the roadway to absorb the oil. Officials say there was no damage, no accidents and no traffic jams as a result of the oil spill and the cleanup action.
