Okinawa, mainland cities, JSDF get new funding

Date Posted: 2010-11-04

U.S. Armed Forces in Japan, Japanese Self Defense Forces, Tokyo City and 297 local municipalities are breathing easy today as the government allocated adjustment and base operating grants for the coming fiscal year.

Okinawa is a major recipient of the funding, with 24 municipalities garnering ¥6.88 billion yen of the ¥33.54 trillion designated. Okinawa picked up about 20% of the funding, with Okinawa City — home to Kadena Air Base — receiving ¥1.36 billion. Kadena Town, also sharing a border with the sprawling U.S. airbase, picked up ¥950 million.

In mainland Japan, Yokosuka City in Kanagawa Prefecture was awarded ¥2.15 billion by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, while Misawa City in Aomori Prefecture will see funding totaling ¥2.1 billion. Base grants, which cover funding for landowners whose property is being used by U.S. military and Japan Self Defense Force bases, total ¥26.74 billion.

The Ministry says another ¥6.8 billion is designated to cover fixed assets for the coming year. It cites airports and institutions which are used by the American military forces as the primary recipients of funds in this category.
