Lady con artists rip off millions of yen

Date Posted: 2010-11-04

Two Naha City women are under arrest this week, being charged with a variety of criminal endeavors for their fraudulent activities that ripped off public coffers and citizens of more than ¥37.8 million.

Naha City became suspicious of the two women, who they believe began working their scams in 2003, and contacted Naha City Police to conduct an investigation. The women had been filing financial claims, alleging they were poor and needy, seeking public funding. One woman received ¥34 million over a six-year period, while the second benefited to the tune of ¥3.8 million over the same time.

One woman used her illicit gains to invest in stock market. The second filed documents with Naha City claiming a lower salary than she actually received. Naha City has apologized to the public for the women’s scam actions.
