Tanker accident spills oil along east coast

Cleanup operations are continuing after a Panamanian-flagged oil tanker slipped out of control Sunday, crashing into a the Nishihara Town wharf and ripping open a hole in the hull that began spewing oil.

The Nansei Oil Company staff is working with the Maritime Safety Agency and Japan Coast Guard, with 32 vessels initially brought in to clean up the oil. The Coast Guard says 46,000 liters of oil was recovered in the initial nighttime hours of skimming. The oil has spread across Nanjo City, Chinen beaches and Nishihara Townís Onaha area, as well as to Yonabaru Town.

The tanker, the 28,799-ton Pacific Polaris, is based in Hong Kong. Nansei Oil Company has met with local residents to explain the oil spill. The publicís been told thereís no clear answer as to how long oil cleanup operations will take.
