Heavy rains pound Ishigaki Island; damage reservoir

Date Posted: 2010-10-28

Heavy rain storms swept across Ishigaki Island in Okinawa’s southern Yaeyama islands region, dumping so much water that the Nosoko Distribution Reservoir was damaged.

The two-day storm Saturday and Sunday ultimately impacted 70 families in three villages between Sakae, Kanegusuku and Iharama, as the water supply was cut off. An exposed water pipe caused reservoir water to gush out. The Waterworks Bureau of Ishigaki Island responded by installing a temporary water pipe to bring things back to normal Monday.
