Halloween ghouls compete in Mihama on Sunday

Ghosts, goblins and all manner of nocturnal creatures will be prowling the streets on Halloween, but none will be found in greater numbers than at Mihama American Village.

Halloween Mihama 2010 isnít just for kids; itís geared for adults, kids and families all looking for a bit of spooky fun, and maybe to win a prize at the same time. The Costume Contest Sunday afternoon attracts hundreds, literally, all seeking the perfect costume to win the $500 first prize, $300 second prize or $150 third prize. More than that, there are assorted merchandise awards for finishing 4th ~ 10th in the adult competition.

For the youngsters, thereís also treats for kids, including a Super Jumbo Box for first place in the costume competition, a Jumbo Box for second place and a Big Box for finishing third. Assorted candies make up the prizes for finishing 4th ~ 10th. Registration runs 2 p.m. ~ 5 p.m. Sunday, with the on-stage parade and performances taking place in front of the judges from 5 p.m. ~ 7 p.m. An awards ceremony follows the competition.

Halloween Mihama 2010 is sponsored by the Chatan Mihama American Village Jigyosha Kai (Merchants Association), with special support from both Coca Cola and Orion. Many American Village businesses, including Gourmet Kan, Dragon Palace, Plaza f, Kalahai/Fenutin, Jusco, Bell System 24 Okinawa SAT, Akara, Americaya, Village House, Dime Trust Island, Makeman, Chatan Bussan Kousha, Mihama 7 Plex One, Seaside Square and Distortion are also active participants in the festive afternoon and evening.

Many Mihama American Village businesses are participating in trick-or-treat activities for youngsters. Each business is clearly marked with a happy jack-o-lantern at the entrance welcoming the youngsters. Most are offering special Halloween promotions. The American Consulate Naha, American Chamber of Commerce, Chatan Town, Chatan Board of Education, the Chatan Tourist Association, Okinawa Times, Ryukyu Shimpo, Weekly Lequio, NHK Okinawa, RBC, OTV, QAB, Radio Okinawa FM Okinawa and FM Nirai are also supporting the Halloween festivities.

Tsuya Ikeda, Assistant Chairman of the Jigyosha Kai, says all American Village businesses want to make this a special friendship exchange between American and Okinawan communities.
