Date Posted: 2010-10-21

With nearly three months left in the year, statistics show that American GIís are getting into trouble with Okinawa authorities at an alarmingly high rate.

Okinawa Prefectural Police report thereíve been 18 more cases recorded January through September than in all of 2009, with the largest category increases coming from taxi thefts. Last year there were 54 cases involving American service personnel. A total of 23 cases already this year have involved taxis, taxi driver assaults and thefts of money from taxi drivers. A year ago, only 12 cases involved Americans and taxi drivers by this time; the total for the entire year was 17 cases.

Police say only two investigations of American GIís were of the vicious crime nature so far this year. On the other hand, they say the number of criminal cases has increased five-fold so far this year.
