Club issues a call for ukulele players

Date Posted: 2010-10-21

Most people have heard one, but few have actually wrapped their hands around a ukulele, and a local group of musicians is trying to remedy that.

The International Ukulele Club is opening its doors Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., inviting beginners to professionals to join them at Kadena Marina’s Seaside Inn. The Okilele group is inviting Americans and Japanese, urging everyone to attend the afternoon musical session, bring a ukulele, wear an Aloha shirt and bring a song.

Sunday’s get together will mark the first ever monthly Okilele meeting in Okinawa.

The ukulele comes from Hawaii, a subset of the guitar family, generally with four nylon or gut strings or four courses off strings. The ukulele originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of the cavaquinho or braguinha and the rajao, small guitar-like instruments taken to Hawaii by Portugese immigrants. It gained great popularity elsewhere in the United States during the early 20th century, and from there spread internationally.
