World class Elvis impersonator to appear in Leyla

Date Posted: 2010-10-21

Yasumasa Mori is Japanese, but he’s an honorary citizen of Memphis, Tennessee, and he believes he’s Elvis Presley… at least when he’s on stage.

The 49-year-old has been perfecting his Elvis Presley routine for 18 years, singing and entertaining both in the U.S. and Japan. He’s bringing Elvis to Music Bar Leyla in Okinawa City October 27th, an Elvis Tribute Show and 50’s ~ 70’s all oldies and American pop evening. Presley, or Mori to be more precise, has mixed singing, entertaining and karate skills in his performances, including competition at the International Elvis Impersonator Contest where he placed 2nd in 1991.

How good is he? Very, very good. Mori won the title of #1 World Champion Elvis Impersonator in 1992. Equally impressive is that he’s the first non-American to win the title. He travels, bringing Elvis alive in whatever venue he’s performing, including on Kaui Island for Blue Hawaii Week, and in Elvis’ hometown of Memphis. His talent attracted the attention of the city, leading the Memphis mayor to award Mori a Certificate of Honorary Citizenship in the King’s hometown.

Mori’s joined by Jorge Rock and Maiko at Music Bar Leyla for the R & R Carnival event next Thursday, with Band Memphian cranking out the tunes. Doors open at 7 p.m., with the three-hour show starting at 8 p.m. Show tickets – which do not include food or drinks -- are ¥2,000.

Leyla is located on the 4th floor of the Yamane Building on Hwy 330 in Okinawa City, about 200 meters towards Camp Foster from Koza Music Town on the left.
