New group to seek Battle of Okinawa compensation

Date Posted: 2010-10-14

A new organization is being founded in Okinawa with the goal of filing lawsuits on behalf of World War II Battle of Okinawa survivors and their families to gain compensation.

Named the “Okinawa October 10th Battle of Okinawa Casualty People’s Association”, the group’s 32 organizers say “the Japanese state has not apologized or relieved the suffering of casualties from the war, even though it’s been 65 years already. Surviving family members are living with mental anguish and physical pain.” The group’s initial formation was in August, when it allied itself to a nationwide war casualty liaison committee. It’s first action will be cooperate and develop a signature campaign to demand government action.

The organization is a ‘first’ for Okinawa. It will take on both the Japanese and American governments, contending that beginning October 10, 1944, the U.S. military indiscriminately attached Naha City and the southwest archipelago area. It argues the U.S. not only conducted naval bombardment, but also indiscriminate machine gunning, and wants surviving family who died or who were injured in the attacks to be compensated for injury, damages, secondary disease and loss of property. The group says it will demand apologies and compensation from the United States.

The Battle of Okinawa Casualty People’s Association has announced plans to demand the Japanese government provide compensation, too. Essentially, it wants both countries to make restitution for the wartime acts, since America attacked Okinawan people indiscriminately in residential housing areas in violation of international law, and because Japan was at war with the U.S.
