400+ apply for 23 teaching position openings at OIST

Date Posted: 2010-10-14

Okinawa’s new graduate university set to open next year is having no difficulty recruiting a teaching staff, with the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology reporting more than 400 applicants for the current quota of 23 teaching positions.

OIST’s University President, Jonathan Dorphan, says most of the applicants have come from outside Okinawa, but says he’s pleased there have been applicants from within the prefecture, as well. The latest 23 positions bring to 50 the number of teaching positions being filled. The first 27 teachers were hired earlier.

“We are so happy there were so many people wanting teacher jobs,” says Dorphan. “Better yet is that world class people are taking time to look at this university.” He made the comments at the OIST 11th Board of Governors Meeting and 4th Meeting of Establishing Members at the school campus in Onna Village. Dr. Sydney Brenner, the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology chairman, led the two-day conference.
