Iguana adds entertainment for Sun Sun Beach visitors

Date Posted: 2010-10-14

The high tourist season’s come and gone, but visitors are still flocking to Azama Sun Sun Beach because of its special resident.

A 50-centimeter-long green iguana has taken up residence at the beach in Nanjou City, and is gaining popularity among visitors. Children enjoy taking care of the iguana, bringing food on a regular basis. They say Moriya the iguana loves carrots and watermelon. What they don’t know is if the iguana’s a boy or a girl; they do know that it is very, very fast.

“I bought this iguana, but it grew so big,” says a Nanjou City man of the iguana, “and I had no place to keep it, so I brought it to the beach.” Families say the iguana is a welcome addition to the beach, and suggest they’ll bring some turtles—and maybe a small pig—to make it a zoo atmosphere.

Beach staff isn’t so sure about that, but one official says “No, no. We aren’t a zoo, but are proof humans and animals can live together in freedom. Living on this beach, anybody can see the iguana, goat, pig and turtle.”
