Sample exotic steak in a tropical jungle

Date Posted: 2002-11-30

If you would like to enjoy a meal in an exotic atmosphere with a tropical decor on the western side of the island, the place to go is jam, which offers delicious steaks, seafood and vegetables prepared imaginatively on a hot plate.

Opening four years ago, this is the second jam in Japan, with the first located in Aichi prefecture. The restaurant's entrance boasts a large moai, as the mysterious stone heads of Easter Island are called. Owner Kazuyuki Shibata says that it was handmade by staff members. Since he had asked construction workers to build a moai to celebrate the opening of the head restaurant in Aichi, he also wanted the same thing here to serve as the restaurant's trademark. But, he adds jokingly, there is another meaning for the word "moai" in Okinawa. An integral part of Okinawan tradition, a moai is a group of friends or colleagues who meet periodically in order to provide for the mutual financial assistance of all members by contributing money to a pot, which then goes to one person in the group.

The interior of the restaurant is fascinating, with many interesting wooden pieces collected by Shibata-san scattered around. You will be transported to a tropical jungle in the semidarkness and the profusion of plants populating the dining room. The ladies room is something to marvel at, with a fish tank filled with colorful fish on the wall.

Seats surround a big hot plate that is placed in front of you. There are 18 dishes available, including sirloin steak for 2,800, sirloin steak and fish for 3,300, and steak and lobster for 4,300. Each set menu comes with soup, homemade bread, salad, grilled vegetables, rice or cold noodles, ice cream and jasmine tea. The vegetable dishes are made with local Okinawan ingredients, including goya (bittermelon), papaya, tofu, purple sweet potato and more.

After feasting on a delicious meal, you will have dessert in the lounge, which is filled with comfortable, tropical-style furniture. More than 100 kinds of beverages are available. You can take home an original moai cup filled with a cocktail of your choice for 1,400.

A condom shop called Woo! recently opened on jam's first floor, offering many interesting items. The owner established this store because he feels that while sex education is not very prevalent in Japan, it's important to learn about it upon becoming an adult. Jam is located on Highway 58 in Onna Village. Head towards Nago on 58. After passing the Moon Beach Hotel, you will see a big moai statue on your left.
