Prefecture minimum wage to increase ¥13/hour

Date Posted: 2010-09-30

Workers living on the lower end of the labor scale will feel a bit more money in their pockets starting November 1st as the Okinawa District Minimum Wage Council boosts the minimum wage by ¥13.

The minimum wage increases to ¥642 from the present ¥629 per hour, and applies to all workers. The current minimum wage went into effect nearly two years ago. Isao Takeshita, Chairman of the Minimum Wage Council which is comprised of 15 members of the business community, attorneys, labor and influential citizens, says most labor workers are already being paid at a higher-than-minimum-wage rate.

The government and Minimum Wage Councils are working in tandem to improve working conditions and environment. Takeshita says the government’s policy goal is to increase the minimum wage to ¥800 per hour by 2020.
