Okinawa holds title for most newborn babies

Date Posted: 2010-09-30

A new baby is born in Okinawa every 31 minutes and 23 seconds, enough to put the prefecture in the record books for most newborn babies born in Japan.

Okinawa’s not new to the title; it’s held the top post for 36 consecutive years since 1974 In 2009, 16,744 babies were born in Okinawa. Equally impressive is that Okinawa holds the Japan title for most babies born, with Okinawa women averaging 1.79 kids, compared to the Japan average of 1.37. Okinawa’s held that distinction for 35 years.

On the other side of the coin, Okinawa saw 9,932 citizens die last year, an increase of 431 over 2008. Still, the death rate is the lowest in Japan.

Okinawa’s an island of love, and oftentimes the ending of love. Okinawa ranks second in Japan for marriages, but is rated the worst in the nation for divorces. Officials say an Okinawa couple divorces every 2 hours 52 minutes.
