Third candidate could enter gubernatorial race

Date Posted: 2010-09-23

If Urasoe City’s mayor has his way, there’ll be a third candidate in Okinawa’s November 28th gubernatorial election rate.

Mitsuo Gima is pressing local politician Mikio Shimoji to jump into the fray, saying “Okinawa needs a strong leader who can say ‘No’ to Henoko, and the other two candidates can’t remove the Futenma Marine Corps Air Station quickly. It will stay longer if either of these two candidates wins.”

Gima was referring to incumbent governor Hirokazu Nakaima, who’s running for another four years in the prefecture leadership role, and his challenger, Ginowan City Mayor Yoichi Iha. Gima thinks Shimoji, a member of the People’s New Party and a member of the Lower House of Representatives in the Diet, is a better choice.

Shimoji is reportedly considering the challenge.
