Typhoon Fanapi hammers southern Okinawa islands

Date Posted: 2010-09-23

Typhoon Fanapi roared into Taiwan early this week, inflicting heavy damage, but not before making a stop on Okinawa’s southern islands.

Ishigaki, Hateruma and Miyako islands suffered major damage Saturday, including a loss of electrical power to more than 10,000 homes. The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory says Typhoon Fanapi first approached Miyako in the late afternoon, then continued west to strike Yonaguni Island early Sunday morning.

Each of the islands reported damage, with dozens of trees topped. Travelers found themselves grounded as airlines canceled flights, leaving stranded tourists sleeping in the airports at Ishigaki and Miyako. An Ishigaki hotel owner said “we didn’t have electricity, and customers were so hot in their hotel rooms, as they couldn’t open windows or doors because of the storm.”
