Chinese ship tells Japanese survey vessel to “stop work”

Date Posted: 2010-09-16

Tensions in waters off Japan increased over the weekend when a Chinese vessel told two Japan Coast Guard vessels to stop their work about 280 kilometers west-northwest of Okinawa Island.

The Coast Guard survey ships Shoyo and Takuyo were in Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone territory when they were asked by the Chinese ship Hai Jian 51 to stop its activities. Authorities say the Chinese ship, which belongs to the Chinese State Oceanic Administration, issued the request in English, via radio, about 7:40 a.m. The two vessels continued surveying operations for several more hours.

Japan Coast Guard officials aboard the survey ships told the Chinese they were conducting legitimate surveying operations within Japan EEZ territory.
