Tasty sushi rolls to go near Kadena

Date Posted: 2010-09-16

Sushi is a mainstay of Japanese cuisine, but nowhere more so than at Sushi Roll Shin, where works of culinary art glide off the fingertips of Nobuo Aritsuka.

The Tokyo native opened Sushi Roll Shin nearly four months ago after returning from a dozen years stint as a sushi chef in Australia, choosing Okinawa for its warm weather, atmosphere and leisurely lifestyle. Add to that a similarity to Hawaii, where a professional surfer from Honolulu had fallen in love with his tasty sushi creations and told him he should open a sushi restaurant there.

Sushi rolls are extremely popular both with foreigners and Okinawans, and Aritsuka has assembled an array of delicious rolls that lure people into his restaurant near Gate 2 Street, just around the corner and a three-minute walk from Richie Rich Boutique. Sushi Shin specializes mostly take-out meals although there are a few seats and tables in the restaurant also. His current top-selling sushi is a combination tuna-salmon-avocado roll with a zesty spicy sauce selling for a reasonable ¥500. Kids love the tuna salad roll, while the menu’s most popular item is a smoked salmon roll filled with cream cheese.

Sushi Roll Shin’s top luncheon recommendation is the California roll, with starting prices at ¥450. The restaurant also has small sushi rolls for as low as ¥120 each. Aritsuka prides himself on diversity, offering ten different kinds of original sushi rolls; he even has a vegetarian roll and says a variety of toppings are available.

For those who’s taste doesn’t gravitate toward traditional sushi, Aritsuka is ready to serve them, too. He’s a full menu that includes fried chicken spring rolls, fried rice balls and green soybeans, to cite just a couple. He also assembles set hors d’oeuvre menus, with prices starting at ¥2,450.

Sushi Roll Shin is open daily, except Wednesdays, from 12:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Located at 2-1-22 Chuo in Okinawa City, Sushi Roll Shin also carries a variety of sake served tableside, along with nigiri sets starting at ¥700. Others are karaage, harumaki, yakionigiri and edamame. Their telephone number is 098-989-5280.
