RC enthusiasts can now race outdoors

Date Posted: 2010-09-09

Rajikon Tengoku is the only place on Okinawa for radio-controlled vehicles hobbyists to race, and now the company’s taking the adventures to a new height with introduction of off-road racing.

The shop, better known to foreigners as RC Paradise, is the one-stop spot for more than 10,000 models of radio controlled cars and trucks, offering products by leading Japanese manufacturers Tamiya and Yokomo, including tires perfect for Rajikon’s in-house race circuit, which serves as three separate courses, including a drift course, a Mini-Z course, and a rock crawling course. Now comes The Hill at Camp Courtney!

Opened early this year, The Hill at Camp Courtney operates four off-road courses for RC lovers of all skill levels, and they’re absolutely free. The Hill has 1/8 scale, 1/10th scale, beginner and kids course, and a rock crawling area. The bird’s eye view of the course is best from the control tower that rises three meters above the terrain. The Hill operates 8 a.m. to dusk on weekdays, and 9 a.m. to dusk on weekends and national holidays.

Racing events are held once a month, and The Hill is equipped with pits for RC model vehicles. To get to The Hill, would-be racers must first enter Camp Courtney from the main gate, then take the first right turn and follow the road for approximately 200 meter. The coolest hill on the island is located on the right.

RC Paradise ala Rajikon Tengoku organizes RC car races every weekend, although its circuit course is open weekdays noon ~ 11 p.m., and 11 a.m. ~ 11 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Fees apply for using the course, based upon the length of time racers want to play. Rajikon payments must be made in yen, but credit cards are also accepted.

Rajikon is on Naval Kadena, a large shopping mall on Highway 58. The complex includes a furniture store, A Kanehide DIY garden store and a ¥100 store. To enter Naval Kadena, travel north toward Nago on Highway 58, passing Kadena Marina on the left, then making a left at the corner with a Lawson’s and a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.
