Three locations considered for Okinawa graduate school

Date Posted: 2002-11-30

Consideration for the site of the new Okinawa graduate school has been narrowed to three; Onna Village, Kitanakagusuku and Itoman City. Originally 36 localities vied for the institution. According to a report published by the selection committee on Nov. 23, the three sites under final consideration are 279 hectares of land in Tancha, Onna Village, the current Awase Golf Course site in Kitanakagusuku (46.6 ha) and 120.3 ha in Kyan in Itoman City. The committee is expected to make its final decision in December.

In selecting the area, the committee used several criteria to arrive at its conclusions. First of all the area has to be large enough to accommodate the campus. Access to the area was another important factor. The third was the number of landowners the state has to negotiate to buy the land.

In the beginning 26 locales expressed their willingness to host the school that is expected to bring considerable economic benefits to the community where it will locate. The 9-member committee visited each one of them before narrowing the candidates to the final three.

Kyan in Itoman City boasts the easiest access to Naha Airport, only 20 to 25 minutes by car whereas it takes about an hour from Tancha in Onna Village. The area in Itoman is owned by 221 people, Onna land has 109 owners and Awase Golf Course has 259.
