Dozens of flights cancelled by typhoon

Date Posted: 2010-09-01

More than 140 flights in and out of Naha Airport have been cancelled Tuesday afternoon as Typhoon Kompasu churns toward the prefecture from the southeast.

Typhoon Kompasu is expected to cross over Okinawa about 7~8 p.m., packing winds of up to 216kph (134mph) as it travels to the northwest at 20 kilometers per hour. The Japan Meteorological Agency says Kompasu, the first typhoon of the season to strike Okinawa, is expected to bring strong winds until early Wednesday, with atmospheric pressure measuring 960 hectopascals at its center.

The U.S. military forces on Okinawa have moved into Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness TC-1 E, meaning that actual winds of 50 knota or more are occurring. Personnel movement is restricted during the typhoon.
