Miyazato loses in Japan; gains in LPGA rankings

Date Posted: 2010-08-19

Okinawa’s Ai Miyazato had to settle for fourth place in the NEC Karuizawa 72 Sunday in Nagano Prefecture, but that was enough to boost her to second place in the Ladies Professional Golf Association Rolex rankings.

South Korea’s Jihyai Shin fell from the leader position to third in this week’s Rolex rankings, moving American Cristie Kerr into first place and Miyazato to the number two slot. Suzann Pettersen is fourth, while Yani Tseng of Taiwan moved up to fifth.

Lee Ji Hee of South Korea came from behind to win the NEC Karuizawa 72, reeling off five birdies in her final round 67 to finish 13-under-203 while winning her 13th title in Japan. The 25-year-old Miyazato, who’s already won four times on the U.S. LPGA Tour this season, had started the first two rounds strong, faltering with bogeys and pars replacing her birdies of earlier holes.

Miyazato is now in the U.S. where she’s entered in the Safeway Classic that begins today. “I was able to play at my own pace at the NEC Karuizawa tournament,” she says, “adding “I think I will be able to return to the LPGA Tour in good shape.”
