Rental cars involved in 50% of traffic accidents

Date Posted: 2010-08-19

The rental car business is booming, as tourism flourishes in Okinawa, but with it comes a warning from law enforcement officers that ill-trained mainland drivers are accounting for more than half of the island’s traffic accidents.

Tourists are not used to driving in Okinawa, Okinawa Prefectural Police say, and the comparatively wide open spaces here cause immature, inexperienced tourist drivers to think their skills are better than they actually are. Northern Okinawa accounted for more than 50% of the traffic accidents involving damage to other vehicles during the January ~ June period. Police say 52.8% of the accidents, 171 of 324 cases, were by rental car drivers.

The Motobu District Police Traffic Section says police across the prefecture are stressing the need for more caution in driving Okinawa’s less congested roadways than mainland Japan, and have even posted signs that warn “rental car accidents frequently happen”, and begun issuing flyers and accident prevention papers to rental car drivers.
