Cops arrest driver after fatal hit-and-run crash

Date Posted: 2010-08-19

A speeding motorist in Tomigusuku City’s Gibo area crashed into a young school girl as she walked to an after school child care club, then fled the accident scene.

The seven-year-old girl was taken to a hospital, where she was declared dead from brain injuries.

The fleeing hit-and-run driver didn’t get far; the driver of another car observed the accident and then saw the car stop at a traffic light 350 meters down the road. He followed, then ran to the car where he told the elderly female driver “Wait! You just hit a girl.” She and the witness returned to the accident scene, where Tomigusuku Police arrested her on suspicion of accidental vehicular homicide and failing to provide aid to an accident victim.

Police investigators say the woman is denying the accident, yet has admitted “I noticed that I did hit something, but I didn’t think it was a girl.” Police say the girl was in a crosswalk, crossing the street, in front of the woman’s car.
