Kanís fate to be decided in DPJ presidential poll

Date Posted: 2010-08-12

Prime Minister Naoto Kan has marked September 14th clearly on his calendar; thatís the day his Democratic Party of Japan will conduct a presidential poll to decide whether he should remain in office.

Kan thinks he should, but DPJ executives have expressed concern about declines in party ratings. The DPJ lost seats in Julyís House of Councilors election, but did pick up a small victory in a Nagano election a few days ago. Kan has met with DPJ Diet members and told them heís excited about remaining Prime Minister and leading the party.

Meanwhile, many are watching the former DPJ secretary-general, wondering what heíll do in the run-up to next monthís election poll. Ichiro Ozawa, who has been vocal and critical of Kanís leadership, has a strong hand with the largest of the DPJís intraparty groups.
