Nakagusuku Port chosen for infrastructure improvement

Date Posted: 2010-08-12

Okinawa’s Nakagusuku Port has been chosen as one of 43 ports nationwide that will be given priority status in a new infrastructures improvement program to begin next April.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism says Nakagusuku Port is one of 43 in 32 prefectures to be chosen from the list of 103 ports that were considered. The program is aimed at reducing waste in public works programs. The Democratic Party of Japan initiated the program last September.

Key factors in selecting ports for the program were cargo transaction volumes, and the ports’ importance to regional economies. The ministry is ext expected to announce its choice of ports to be designated as international freight shipments hubs. No Okinawa ports are believed on the list, which has Keihin, which includes Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama, on the short list along with Kobe and Osaka.
