Hirara becomes leader of Asian “Health Cities’ Union”

Hirara City of Miyako Island has been elected the leader of newly formed “Health Cities’ Union” of Asia. The founding meeting of the group of 15 cities of Asia-Pacific region was held Oct. 15-17 in Manila under the auspices of WHO. Hirara City was the only participating city from Japan. The purpose of the union is to promote heath and welfare programs among member cities, and share experiences in the area. It aims to promote healthy environment and living habits among local people.

Mayor Akira Ishimine represented Hirara at the meeting. In a speech after the meeting ,Ishimine said that since Hirara has a long history of public welfare and a special expertise in caring for Hansen disease patients, he feels that the city has much to offer to other members. “Many participating cities still have people who suffer of Hansen’s disease, and we can share our expertise in treating those people with them. I think we have much to offer,” Ishimine said.
